COURSE:  THE SPIRIT, THE BIBLE, AND WOMEN

A 40-Lesson Course taught in 4 Parts of 10 Lessons each, taught by Drs. Susan Stubbs Hyatt and Eddie  L. Hyatt. (Recorded September 17, 2014 - October 7, 2015.)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Spirit, The Bible, and Women is a comprehensive course based on the books, experience in ministry, and academic research papers of Dr. Susan Hyatt. Susan developed her books and this particular course during her 17 years of academic studies, culminating in her highly-acclaimed doctoral dissertation at Regent University School of Divinity (2000).

The course provides evidence based on fact, as opposed to speculation based on bias and opinion. Comprehensive in scope, the couse covers relevant studies in Old and New Testament, theology, and Church history. Besides being informational, the course is highly inspirational.

The course is designed to confront the erroneous presuppositions of traditional theology, those being that woman is evil, inferior, unequal, and unclean. These presuppositions lead to the subordination of women in much, if not most, of Christendom, historically speaking.

However, the Bible, correctly interpreted in terms of the authors’ intentions, tells an entirely different story. That is to say, the Bible teaches the equality of men and women in terms of substance and value, privilege and responsibility, function and authority in all areas of life and leadership, ministry and marriage.

The application is clear. The fruit is good and eternal. Both men and women are set free from religious error to flourish in all of life. Marriages are healed and strengthened in the light of Biblical equality, an inherent part of the Message of Jesus. The Body of Christ functions as it was meant to function.

It becomes clear that gender is not to be the ruling factor life and ministry dictating who can do what. Instead, the Word and the Spirit, working together, release both men and women from the gender-defined role designations of fallen culture. The empowering truth of the Bible, confirmed by the present-day activity of the Holy Spirit, unburdens men and women, releasing both to be and do what the Creator God designed each to be and do, His will being made clear, not by gender, but by the natural talents, personalities, and spiritual giftings of His men and women.

Should you wish to receive a Certificate of Completion for this course, study each lesson, study the notes and recommended books, and request an exam when you feel ready.

PART 1
Getting to Know What Jesus Taught
and What He Didn’t Teach about Women

Part 1, Lesson 1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hnay7xchp0E

It's important that we get it right! The Biblical message of gender equality in Christ is vital for a number of imporant reasons. The so-called “woman issue” is not simply an issue for women and their well-being, but it is a “church issue” with significant ramifications for the men and women, marriage, Christian leadership, evangelism and missions.

Part 1, Lesson 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqeJ9Up9WrM

This lesson includes a discussion of the cultural restrictions on women in 1st century Judaism, and shows how revolutionary were the words and actions of Jesus toward women. Included is a note about Jesus’ healing of the woman with the issue of blood and its significance within this cultural setting. See 10 Things Jesus Taught about Women by Susan Hyatt.

Part 1, Lesson 3

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1CcGJmT1Ac

This lessons addresses, among other things, why Jesus chose 12 men to be His Disciples and why this action by Jesus cannot be used as a legitimate basis for excluding women from leadership roles in the church.

Part 1, Lesson 4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwSo_uAGZyM

What did Jesus teach and not teach about marriage? This lesson challenges traditional teachings that are based in the traditions of fallen church culture and not in Scripture, accurately interpreted in view of the authors’ original intentions. The wise and Biblical approach is for each marriage partner to function according to their gifts and personalities, rather than according to gender-defined roles imposed by fallen culture and a corrupt church.

Part 1, Lesson 5

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcZNrDbCGFc

What is the Biblical meaning of “ministry" and what is the Biblical role of women in the work of the Lord? Consideration is given to the story of the Samaritan woman who was the first person to whom Jesus revealed His identity as the Messiah. Jesus keeps upsetting the “proper social order.”

Part 1, Lesson 6

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UNV4V_HoCg

In this teaching entitled "GOD’S Family Values," Drs. Eddie & Susan Hyatt share how Jesus defined family and how He expanded His own family to include those who meet certain, specific criteria. He answers the questions, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers and sisters?”

Part 1, Lesson 7

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ri87N9ki9A

This lesson addresses the absurd, but prevalent, assertion that gained control in Medieval Church theology that says that women do not possess the image of God in the same way or to the same extent as men. The implication of this notion is that women cannot represent God, as men do, that women are inferior to men, and that they cannot, therefore, be included in senior leadership roles in the Church.

Part 1, Lesson 8

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iK6rC8eqHho

"The Role of Women in the Apostolic" is the theme of this lesson. Drs. Eddie & Susan Hyatt discuss the nature of apostolic ministry and what Jesus and the New Testament say about women and the apostolic. They also discuss what modern apostolic movements are saying about women and the apostolic and how that compares with the Biblical message.

Part 1, Lesson 9

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmZErBerYKM

In God’s eyes, what has ultimate value in the life of the believer? Again and again, Jesus demonstrated what He considers to be of most important thing in a person’s life. In fact, He shocked his audience by firmly correcting a well-meaning woman's compliment because it was not in line with what He considered to be of supreme value in the sight of God.

Part 1, Lesson 10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzBm0nU8-7w
This Christmas-season lesson shows how Mary's response to the angel Gabriel's announcement to her is a pattern and inspiration for our faith in believing God for the impossible. The coming Emmanuel was a miracle. It took a woman. It took a woman of faith who would cooperate with God in the “impossible.”

PART 2
The Fall Away from The Teachings of Jesus
about Many Things, Including Women

Part 2, Lesson 1

Learning about the Church and Women from History
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XM3YptxFdrU

Learn 5 reasons why Christians should know and understand church history. Learn about “The Fall of the Church” and the implications for women. Then, in an unplanned segment at the beginning, share in the inbreaking of the Holy Spirit during a discussion of the importance of persevering in faith as a necessary component in seeing the breakthroughs that God has planned for His children.

Part 2, Lesson 2

When the Church Began to Suppress Women
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dbXBn77uJw

Rejection by the institutionalizing church of a 2nd Century revival movement marked the turning point downward and away from Biblical thinking in the Church, as well as for women in the Church. It has been noted that the Church is still recovering from this rejection of the Move of God.

Part 2, Lesson 3

“Rib” and Rhema Words to Live By.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIrxZGRBrWs

In this inspiring lesson, Dr. Sue Hyatt shares insightful truths about the true meaning of the word that has been wrongly translated “rib” in Genesis 2:21-24. Dr. Eddie Hyatt then shares rhema words that God has given them, words that have comforted and sustained them through the years.

Part 2, Lesson 4

How the Church Got It Wrong about Women
and 7 Reasons We Need to Get it Right

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQc_81XWKRo

Historically, the church drifted away from the Message of Jesus and Early Christianity, and the Message was distorted by pagan ideas, particularly about women. These distortions became the doctrinal fabric of the Church’s thinking about women, displacing what Jesus and the Bible really teach.

Part 2, Lesson 5

"Your 'Turning' Will Be To Your Husband" (Gen. 3:16)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6HyU0WquK4

Dr. Sue Hyatt shares a word study from Genesis 3:16 concerning the Hebrew word teshuqa that is translated "desire." She shows that the Hebrew word literally means "turning” and discusses when and by whom the alteration in translation was made, as well as the ramifications of the warped interpretation of this passage.

Part 2, Lesson 6

Silence and a Royal Vow
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYdwfQqMj8A

Women were not silenced in the Old Testament, the Gospels, Acts, nor the Epistles. When and why, then, did the idea of women not being permitted to speak in church develop? And what is the Biblical truth? Dr. Sue Hyatt spells it out in this lesson.

Part 2, Lesson 7

The Struggle for Women in the 16th Reformation
to Find Equality and a Voice

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwzvzXJHSwY

Once the Bible was put in the hands of the people, the Holy Spirit had something to work with, and the long road of RESTORATION OF TRUTH began. This lesson reveals the struggle of women in the 16th Century Reformation to find equality and a voice. It’s such an eye-opener!

Part 2, Lesson 8

Did Sarah Call Abraham LORD, Lord or lord? (1 Peter 3:6-7)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhEo547uhOQ

This lesson explores 1 Peter 3:6-7 and the lives of Sarah and Abraham, demonstrating that Sarah was a confident and fearless woman, not afraid to confront her husband when the situation called for it. Learn what this passage really means.

Part 2, Lesson 9

Making the Most of YOUR Moment in Time
nd The “Weaker Vessel” (1 Peter 3:7)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzrK-x1eSt8

Have you ever wondered what Peter meant (1 Peter 3:7) when he used the expression "weaker vessel”? This lesson also makes known the progress toward restoration of the Biblical Message revealed in the 17th Century Early Friends [Quaker] Movement. This amazing movement, the fastest growing movement in the Western World at the time, was compassionate, Biblically literate, intensely persecuted, thoroughly egalitarian, and sacrificially evangelistic. These consecrated Believers impacted their generation with the Gospel and played a primary role in the founding of the United States of America. It was in the midst of teaching this lesson that Sue made the statement that they "maximized their moment in time" and then exhorted us all to "maximize our moment in time."

Part 2, Lesson 10 - Maximizing Your Moment on God's Timetable and an Amazing Women Named Margaret Fell Fox.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1YSe6U9FaI
This lesson examines the amazing lives of three Believers: a cobbler, a mother of eight, and a wealthy aristocrat. These were George Fox, Margaret Fell Fox, and William Penn, all whom were Quaker leaders of the 17th century revival movement.

PART 3
Progress Toward the Restoration of Biblical Truth

Part 3, Easter Edition - The Power & Benefits of the Resurrection
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2XI0xm_LFQ

"The Power & Benefits of the Resurrection" is the theme of this special, Easter-season lesson. The Crucifixion, Sabbath Rest, and Resurrection in Scripture have serious implications for both men and women equally today.

Part 3, Lesson 1

Women in the Methodist Revival
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGtL27n67vg

The progress toward Restoration of the Message of Jesus, and therefore of the equality of women, continued in the Methodist Revival. Learn about important women such as Susanna Wesley and their far-reaching influence then and now.

Part 3, Lesson 2

Women in the Early Methodist Revival and the Power of a Consecrated Life
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjW3_t9rG6s

This lesson informs and inspires women, as well as men, to be all God planned, based on His will, as opposed to the demands and restrictions of fallen culture in the Church. Learn about God’s women who made a difference despite the restrictions they faced.

Part 3, Lesson 3

Progress Toward Restoration of the Biblical Equality of Women Between 1800-1840
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULgY_K5vYX0

"Progress Toward Restoration of the Biblical Equality of Women Between 1800-1840" is the theme for this lesson that majors on the Second Great Awakening and the impact it had on lifting the status of women in the church and society. Toward the end of the lesson, there is a powerful ministry of the Holy Spirit when Eddie reads about certain women who "confessed their sin" of not speaking in His Name, simply because they had restrained themselves in obedience to cultural and religious restrictions.

Part 3, Lesson 4

The Great Missionary Movement and Women
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydO_vCTx9Fc

The 19th Century was an incredible time for the Church. The Second Great Awakening had spawned a great missionary movement that was characterized by a multitude of women, particularly single women, who put their lives on the line and carried the Gospel to the remotest parts of the earth. Do you know these women? Or have they been written out of history?

Part 3, Lesson 5

Continued Progress Toward the Equality of Women as Seen in the Missionary Movement.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3I-vv89MbE

This powerful lesson not only shows the mobilization of women but also highlights their faith and resilience, especially in the life of Ann Judson,  the first woman to go as a foreign missionary from America. Ann Judson "bounced back" from great adversities to help lay the foundation for Christianity in Burma, now known as Myanmar.

Part 3, Lesson 6

The Progress Toward Equality for Women as Revealed in the 19th Century Healing Movement
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TqtsiupexY

The road to restoration continued in the Divine Healing Movement of the 19th Century. They share the healing testimony of one of the leaders of this movement, A. B. Simpson, and derived practical lessons for us today. Again, the elevation of women toward equality is evident in the activity of the Holy Spirit in the lives of God’s women whom He chose to use in powerful ways, thus challenging the traditional theology of women.

Part 3, Lesson 7

Progress in the Equality of Women in the 19th Century Holiness
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mazANaxZ0tM

The Holiness Movement continued the restoration of the Gospel Message, and the progress toward the equality of women. Phoebe Palmer, the leader anointed by God, was “written out of history,” but her inspiring story has been recovered and her writings are now available! We are inspired and awakened to obedience to the call of God as we learn of Phoebe and other women in this Movement.

Part 3, Lesson 8

Social Justice, the Gospel, and Women
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYmk03iPnpQ

It is important to differentiate between the legitimate message of Biblical equality and the modern Social Justice Movement, a movement that has roots in human need, Liberation Theology, and Secular Humanism. It is a movement that uses selected Scripture to legitimize its actions, pretending to subscribe to Christian values, and misleading multitudes of naïve Believers. These two movements, Biblical Equality and SJM, are diametrically opposed, the former being Spirit-directed; the latter, cause-driven.

Part 3, Lesson 9 - Righting Social Wrongs God's Way and the Example of Hannah Whitall-Smith
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVZ2aWfgSDw

Part 3, Lesson 10 - Grasping God's Will and the Life and Work of Dr. Katharine Bushnell
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEaYxTTH3Y8

Keenly aware of the abuse of women, medical missionary, Dr. Katharine Bushnell eventually saw the fallacy and futility of being driven by the social need, and instead, turned her efforts toward changing hearts and minds through dedicating her brilliant mind to in-depth research and teaching of The Bible. She became Spirit-led, not cause-driven. And that is when she began making a LASTING difference for all of us! Hers is a powerful story! Her classic, of course: God's Word to Women!

Regarding Women

Part 4, Lesson 1

The Baptism in the Holy Spirit
(God's Way to Make a Better Tomorrow)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZEu00Fa_XI

We create a better tomorrow not by might, nor by power, but by the Spirit of the Lord (Zechariah 4:6). The Lord would give us power to live and to be His witnesses. His means is the indwelling Person of the Holy Spirit, and He speaks to us of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
